Recommendations for handling bitumen prior to FTIR spectroscopy

Abstract The application of chemical analysis on bituminous materials has increased drastically over the past decades. One most common spectroscopic methods used in field research is Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Since ATR-FTIR a surface sensitive method, sample or specimen handling complex material like bitumen prior to its needs be considered, especially for people new technique. This study looks at impact heating time and temperature as well storage conditions oxidation specimen. Four binders from same crude oil source but different specification classes (unmodified styrene–butadiene–styrene polymer modified) two sources were investigated. results show that small quantities 180 °C up 30 min little formation oxidized species, when proper thermal monitoring conducted. Special cases where does occur are reported detail. Furthermore, strong induced by day light, stored behind glass with no UV radiation present, which can reach short-term ageing level within 1 h. Thus, 5–10 followed dark, climatized room measured one hour after preparation recommended. These should act recommendation future FTIR ensure unbiased comparable measurements.
